Walking through the halls of MWC, past the buzz of the booths and meetings rooms and over the din of the crowds and the pontifications of industry leaders, it seems that many have jumped on the bandwagon of doom and gloom. However, a positive message rolling off the lips of executive and analysts alike is that of "BONDI". BONDI may very well be the effort that lifts the lowly masses of mobile handsets to the lofty heights of the iconic iPhone.

But what is BONDI really? Well, at its core it is a simple and well-known idea: bring the capabilities of the device to web applications (and vice-versa) in a safe-to-use and secure way. Yes, this is a simple and valuable idea but one that would never have seen the light of day with out the combined efforts of two highly active and engaged industry bodies: the LiMo Foundation and OMTP. LiMo has created a legal framework and "safe harbor" for ideas like OMTP's BONDI to be realized. Rarely has there been such a freedom of sharing and an air of collaboration from commercial companies working to drive success for the whole ecosystem.

The broad support from LiMo members for OMTP's BONDI shows LiMo's ability to shake the roots and directions of the industry in the name of openness and collaboration, to the benefit of all mobile value chain constituents...shaking that must be felt strongly in the offices of Apple and Google and other providers of platforms that "feature" proprietary web runtimes and widget support.
